Helpful Information about some of the terms used on your Summer Reading Assignment:
What is a memoir?
A memoir is an extremely personal, highly emotional piece of autobiographical writing in which the writer focuses on the highlights or meaningful moments of his/her past. The entire life of the writer is NOT usually covered in a memoir. Instead, the writer focuses on a brief period of time, contemplating the meaning of those events. Even though memoirs are based on true events, they tend to have a fictional quality to them because they rely on the typical narrative structure and stylistic techniques often associated with novels and short stories.
What does the word genre mean?
A genre is a division, or type, of literature.
What is literary nonfiction?
Literary nonfiction is a type of writing that uses the literary techniques normally associated with fiction (dialogue, narrative structure, figurative language, & other stylistic techniques) to write about nonfiction (real people, places, and events). Literary nonfiction has many forms: memoirs, essays, nature & travel writings, nonfiction novels, and, sometimes, feature stories in newspapers and magazines.
